3D GIS – some videos

I am becoming interested in the application of 3D / 4D GIS for development projects and started doing some research ….

One company I came across is Supermap. This is a large, Chinese GIS solutions provider. Its clients include many companies and government bodies in both China and Japan, and the software is in use in more than 130 countries. Supermap’s website (here) says that it “fulfills the needs for managing, visualizing and analyzing spatial data, serving them out via the Web, and customizing all kinds of GIS applications that best fit the customers’ business needs”.

The company has a number of videos on Youtube which relate to 3D and 4D GIS. They show some interesting ways in which GIS can be applied today. Examples include:

  • 3D utilities network against a neutral (virtual world) background, where details of utility link dimensions, capacities can be displayed (see video here)
  • Construction project management in this video at about 6 mins 43 secs (here)
